The new Health and Wellness Center at the Bunker Hill Community College campus in Charlestown is a 48,000 square foot new addition for health education and training as well as athletic programs. The project included a competition gym, fitness center, “smart” classrooms for the health science program, faculty offices, as well as teaching classrooms for respiratory therapy, ultrasound, x-ray, medical imaging, and nursing. As part of BHCC’s Climate Action Plan, the two-story center received LEED Gold certification.
Plumbing systems in the health education area included Basic Skills, Acute Critical Skills and Acute Respiratory Skills teaching classrooms provided with full medical gas systems for oxygen, vacuum, and compressed air, including alarms, controls, outlets and accessories. These allow the staff to simulate actual operations of these types of units in real time to provide hands-on experiences to the students. Air compressors, vacuum pumps and manifolded oxygen cylinders were provided to support these real time experiences.
Plumbing in the Fitness /Athletic areas included Toilet Rooms to serve the Fitness Center and users of the outdoor athletic fields, and team locker rooms, Shower/Toilet Rooms a Trainer’s Room with ice machine, therapy tub and laundry facilities to support the inter-mural and inter-scholastic teams.
LEED Gold was achieved in part from use of battery powered, sensor operated flush valves and lavatory faucets, with ultra-low flow fixtures including 1.28 GPF water closets, 0.125 GPF urinals, 0.5 GPM lavatory faucets and automated wash fountain spouts and 1.5 GPM shower heads.
This award winning, $23 million project was completed in the fall of 2009.
