R.W. Sullivan Engineering has recently completed the plumbing and fire protection design of a 100,000 square foot addition to Children’s Hospital Boston. This new 10-story addition will include 44 new patient beds, 2 new MR Imaging suites, and approximately 10,000 square feet of additional emergency department space. Situated on a relatively small urban plot, the estimated $100 million project included several design and coordination challenges which were met through teamwork aided by the 3D design capabilities of Revit.
The plumbing systems include a new point of entry domestic water filtration system, new variable speed drive medical vacuum pumps, and medical air compressors. New fixtures include low flow faucets and showers as well as dual flush water closets. The fire protection system includes a new campus primary fire pump as well as a secondary fire pump supplied by a new on-site fire protection water storage tank.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.
